Dear friends, colleagues, peers, vendors, and members,

In light of the current global pandemic, it’s fair to say that all of us have been forced to think about our health recently. I hope for those of you who have made fitness a part of your lifestyle, the decision has been validated!  Exercise IS medicine and now more than ever we are reminded of it’s importance.

I’m reaching out today to share my own recent health scare experience with you and also update you all on the future of my health and fitness businesses.    

I was recently diagnosed with a rare lung disease called Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension or PAH.  PAH is a progressive life-threatening disease that narrows the arteries of the lungs.  My disease is idiopathic, which means it’s unknown why I have it.  There is no cure for PAH, but thankfully there are treatments to control the symptoms and improve my quality of life.

My symptoms started in July, 2019.  While working out at home, I experienced severe chest pain.  After an appointment with my doctor, they determined I was dehydrated however my symptoms persisted over the next few months. Every time I would exercise, I would experience a light chest pain and dizziness.  After being referred to a cardiologist and having several tests, they found no cause of these symptoms.

Around January my symptoms drastically increased and included blacking out on a regular basis.  At this point, I started going downhill fast.  After several more tests, I ended up at a heart surgeon’s office.  He agreed to admit me to the hospital to allow for quicker testing.  It was then during the first test, they found the pressures in my lungs to be four times that of normal levels. 

I was relieved to finally have an answer, but then quickly deflated when learning about the disease.

Initially doctors didn't know my long-term outlook, as some patients don't respond well to PAH medicine. Possibilities of a double lung transplant or premature death could be in my future.  As a husband, father, and owner of three Fitness Center's (120 employees and 6,000 members), I felt an overwhelming gloom.  So many questions arose, like what would happen to all the people that relied on me…

After several nights of agony, crying with my family and starting a treatment plan, I was released from the hospital ten days later.

It felt so good to be home, but I was very anxious about my future.  One of our biggest worries was being close to emergency medical care.   After my first Duke Hospital appointment and discussing with all my doctors, pharmacist, family members, and close friends, we felt it was best for my health to live closer to Duke hospital and my new PAH medical team. So myself, my lovely wife, Maura, and our three young children (Siler – age 8, Hannah – age 5 and Weston – age 5)  moved to Chapel Hill, NC in April, 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

I’ve had a lot of time to reflect, and there are several things I've learned that I want to share with you all so you don't make the same mistakes I made.

  1. I had mild symptoms for over a year. I should have shared them with my doctor earlier.
  2. If I weren't an avid exerciser, I would have irreversible organ damage. Regular exercise made my body strong enough to withstand the devastation this disease put on me. 
  3. You know your body better than anyone, and if you don't feel right, you must advocate until there is a resolution.

Like most local business owners, I've been working harder now more than ever trying to maneuver through the Covid-19 situation with all three Fitness Centers.  We have developed a plan to keep our members and the facilities as safe as possible.  We have also designed new membership options that have incredible value for current members and anyone who needs to start exercising.   

It never even crossed my mind to give up or not continue with my passion of helping others in the fitness industry.  My wife and I are committed to continuing to own and support all three of our Fitness Centers in Franklin, NC, Clayton, GA and Murphy, NC.  We love providing this service to these communities and feel honored to have the opportunity.  Although we do not currently live nearby, we do genuinely care deeply for the area and the people.

Even though you may not see me at our open houses or at community events, please know that I would love to be present. Our fitness centers exist to support anyone and everyone in the local community.

I look forward to re-opening the opportunity to bring back all of our great classes, trainings and amenities as soon as we are allowed by local government.  Until then I encourage everyone to stay active, stay safe and stay positive!

GREEN INITIATIVES

Solar Heated Water

Our pool water system uses solar heating to keep our water at a comfortable temperature year round. That same technology also heats our shower and sink water.

Smoothie Bar

At our smoothie bar, we use biodegradable cups made from corn resin. Unlike regular plastic cups, these will degrade over time and not clog our landfills.

ZeroFlush

To cut down on waste water our urinals use Zeroflush technology. This eliminates thousands of gallons of wastewater each year.

Excel Hand Dryers

The finest American-made hand dryers in the industry. These high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryers are Green-Spec, Green Certified.

OUR POLICIES

GUEST POLICY

Center members are responsible for their guests.

Guest Fees:

  • Call for current rates.

Fees are per guest, per visit.

PROPER ATTIRE

For your safety, shoes must be worn at all times throughout the building, except in the locker room and swimming area. Bare feet and sandals are not acceptable footwear in the fitness areas. Non-marking shoes are to be worn when using the aerobics room. Shirts must be worn during all activities except swimming. Shirts and shoes must be worn while “in transit” in the lobby.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS

Day lockers are available for use during your workout. You may bring your own lock. You may rent a half locker for $9 per month or a full locker for $14 per month. Locker rooms also have showers and a sauna.

SWIMMING POOL POLICY

Our 25-yard indoor heated swimming pool is open year round. Swim lessons and water aerobics classes are offered. Pool hours are the same as the Center hours.

POOL RULES

  • The FHF pool will close 15 minutes before the entire facility closes.
  • Lap Swim: At least one lane open at all times during the day.
  • Everyone must rinse off before entering the pool. A soap shower is preferred.
  • Please dry off before entering the locker rooms.
  • Children 9 years and under must be under direct adult supervision at all times.
  • Children not potty trained must wear swim diapers and covers at all times.
  • Children 5 and up must use appropriate locker rooms while accompanied by an adult.
  • Large floats and toys are not allowed in the pool. Kickboards are for swimming use only.
  • Emergency equipment is for lifeguard use only.
  • Keep off lane ropes.
  • No glass allowed on the pool deck or in locker room areas.
  • No diving allowed.
  • No sitting, playing, jumping or diving from starting blocks.
  • Anyone with ear infections, skin irritations, open wounds or any communicable diseases may not enter the pool.
  • An emergency phone, first-aid kit, and an AED are available at the Service Desk.
  • Inclement weather: Pool will close for 20 minutes following a sound of thunder or a lightning sighting.
  • No adjusting overhead panels
  • No chewing gum

LAP SWIMMING RULES

  • We encourage lap swimming during designated time. Lane etiquette: Lanes can be shared.
  • If there is one lap swimmer, use of an entire lap lane is allowed; however, no one is entitled to have exclusive use of an entire lane if someone else wants to swim.
  • If there are two lap swimmers, it is acceptable for one swimmer to swim on right side and the second swimmer on left side in one lane.
  • If there are three or more swimmers wishing to swim, the policy is to use circle swimming where swimmers swim out on the right-hand side and back on the left-hand side of lane line. The first lane (closest to the wall) should be for slower swimmers and the second lane for faster swimmers.
  • If there are only two lanes up during designated adult swim hours and there are six or more swimmers, the Service Desk will try to assist in putting up more lap lanes.
  • During our Aqua Aerobics classes, one lap lane will be available for lap swimmers. No swimming outside of the one lane unless you are participating in the Aqua Aerobics class.

POOL FACTS

  • 36 laps (or 71 lengths) = 1 Mile
  • Pool temperature is approximately 86 degrees year round.

WHIRLPOOL RULES

  • Whirlpool time should be limited to 15 minutes.
  • Children under the age of 3, pregnant women, and persons with high blood pressure or cardiac conditions should NOT use the whirlpool.

POOL PARTY

Pool parties are available to members and open to the public. Different days and times are available. Please see the Service Desk for pricing and scheduling.

YOUTH POLICY

  • The following guidelines have been established for the safety of your children.
  • Children ages 5 and under are not allowed in the sauna and those between the ages of 6 and 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Children ages 5 and up are not allowed in opposite sex locker rooms.
  • Children ages 11 and under are not allowed in the weight or cardio areas.
  • Children ages 12-14 must be accompanied by a parent to be in the weight or cardio areas.
  • Please refer to the Pool Rules for information regarding children’s policies and the pool.
